Beware domain name scammers

dodgy-domain-name-sellersLookout for dodgy domain name resellers people, in late Dec 2009 I received an ‘offer’ to register my domain www.evolvedwebsites.net.au, for just $245.00 AUD.

As .com.au domains should only cost about $50 this is a total rip-off, the letter is very well presented and even offers a free iPod shuffle if I buy before Dec 18th (at $79 they can afford to give one away right?).

This scam is often tried on domains due to expire, they will send you an invoice to renew your domain name, and in the fine print it will say ‘this is an invitation only’ which makes it legal. Just.

My advice, check with who your domain registration company is first (do a search in your email, they will have sent you a receipt), such as NetRegistry.

Creating an email link in our Evolved CMS

We are in the  middle of updating our CMS Manual to v6, and thought we’d post a few of the new items on our Blog for people who don’t read our manual regularly (I mean, who would?).

To make a text link that open the persons email program:

  1. edit the Textbox
  2. selected the desired text and click the ‘add link’ icon
  3. in the dialog box, type in ‘mailto:’ followed by the email address and press Save.

E.g. mailto:me@gmail.com

Translate nearly any language (yes, Google again)

Translation and language tools from Google, a quick overview.

Translate inputTranslating nearly any language (see this list) into English just got much easier with Google releasing some new language tools at http://translate.google.com

You can type text directly into the box provided, or copy and paste, and then hit the ‘translate’ button. Works a charm!

The best part is, well there’s two best parts really, automatic detection of language and contextual translation.

Automatically detects the language

This is a great time saver, instead of choosing ‘German’ or ‘French’ from a long list, Google figures it out for you.

Or if you want to translate something and you’re not even sure what language it written in…

Contextual translation

Translated text isn’t just a literal word-for-word translation, it changes depending on context, which makes it far better than most simple translations.

In my tests of German words for a recipe, it accurately picked up the difference between ‘teaspoon’ and ‘1 tablespoon’.
I’m not so sure about this one, will review it and update this article shortly.

Translate a whole website

Just type in the url, like I did for while researching phone card plans on a recent trip to Germany, here’s the T-Mobile website:
T-mobile

all the menus turned out ok, only the image-ads are still in German:

T-mobile 2

Has anyone else had experiences using Google Translate?
